About

Testing smart access control systems at the world’s northernmost ice hotel

A major development is underway in Alta, Norway, where dormakaba is testing innovative access solutions in one of the world’s most extreme environments. The Sorrisniva resort, home to the northernmost ice hotel in Norway, provides a unique setting in which to observe insulation and energy efficiency innovations – such as automatic closing doors – under the harshest possible conditions. The aim of this pilot project is to generate insights that support better building design, enhance security in hospitality and improve the overall guest experience.

Innovative access solutions tested under extreme Arctic conditions

dormakaba has launched a pilot project at the Sorrisniva resort in Alta, Norway, with the aim of testing its innovative access solutions in one of the world’s harshest environments. The destination is home to the northernmost ice hotel in Norway and welcomes up to 15,000 visitors each year.

In taking up residence, so to speak, at both the seasonal ice hotel and the year-round Arctic Wilderness Lodge, dormakaba is evaluating how its smart access control technologies perform under real operating conditions. The project is also exploring how smart door systems and people flow management can support a secure and intuitive guest journey.

dormakaba anticipates that it will be able to channel the lessons learned into future access solution development efforts. This will support better management of guest and staff movement, enhance security and improve overall building efficiency.

The access solutions were monitored from January to March 2026 in real Arctic conditions. The results provide a clear basis for deploying these systems in day-to-day hotel operations.
