What is 'Secured By Design' and why is it important?

It was established in response to the sharp rise in theft and burglary due to poorly secured homes being built quickly and cheaply between the 1960s and 1980s. Many of these properties lacked basic security measures and the low-cost doors and windows that had been installed meant that break-ins became increasingly common. The layout of many of these new large housing estates also created environments in which criminal activity could fester.

From its establishment, one of the primary objectives of SBD was to address the serious variations in the quality of products, working with manufacturers to develop and improve standards for a wide range of building products.

SBD also introduced a Police Preferred Specification standard for products that met the highest levels of security. Not only do these products have to be designed and manufactured to the required industry standards but they must also undergo rigorous third-party testing. For example, all doors and windows have to first be certified by a United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) approved certification body to be considered for the Police Preferred Specification.

SBD also works closely with developers to design in a way that eliminates crime – throughout the building/development and planning stages, to create safer neighborhoods. For example, SBD provides guidance on lighting design, improving sight lines and allows passive surveillance through the correct placement of windows.

Over one million SBD homes have been built in the last 20 years and research has revealed that SBD compliant new build properties are around 75% less likely to be burgled compared to an equivalent non-SBD property - with refurbished properties that are now SBD compliant almost 63% less likely to be burgled.

Secured by Design has been a key driver in improving the quality of security products and certification under the scheme provides specifiers with the information to select a solution, confident in its performance.

dormakaba is proud to be among the more than 700 SBD member organisations providing a range of products that have achieved coveted Police Preferred Specification accreditation. SBD accredited products provide assurances for customers and end users that the highest standards for security have been met.

The dormakaba SBD cylinder range includes Expert, Pextra+ and Pextra Guard cylinder locks that feature a number of measures to protect against illegal entry. For example, dormakaba Pextra guard cylinders provide anti-drill, anti-snap, anti-pick and anti-bump protection in addition to patent protected keys preventing illegal copying. As a result, Pextra guard achieves the Grade 6 security standards with EN1303, complying with BS3621 and has a TS007 British Kitemark 3 star rating.
