BIM at dormakaba
Tailored BIM objects
When implementing dormakaba's BIM quote, particular importance was attached to straightforward use and to object lightness. Graphical extras were avoided wherever possible, with a focus placed on the technical properties and functions.
The models are currently developed and ready for Autodesk Revit (.rfa) and Graphisoft Archicad (.pln). You can find an overview of dormakaba's current BIM objects at bimobjects.
The complexity of the objects varies depending on the application: from straightforward parametrisable objects with a simple range of functions, such as our TS93 door closer or BTS80 floor closer, all the way through to highly configurable objects such as the HSW-G horizontal sliding door or KTV 3/4 revolving doors, each BIM object was developed specifically for one area of use and the planning phase.
Here, particular importance was attached to practicality: To avoid overloading the objects, not everything that is technically possible was visualised as a 3D graphic. Instead, importance was attached to ensuring the properties were complete and standards were applied.
Although Building Information Modelling is nothing new, for us as a manufacturer of building products there are still a whole host of questions that are yet to be answered in full or which remain grey areas. The BIM process should ideally begin with the manufacturer of the products used on the construction site: only they can provide reliable information about the properties and prices of their products and guarantee the availability of their products for use.
In order to gear BIM development towards our customers' needs in the future and to develop new fields of use and options for optimisation, we are actively involved in various BIM groups and teams locally and internationally.
dormakaba has been a member of buildingSMART since 2012 and plays an active role in various groups, working in particular on fields such as BIM, door solutions, data exchange, building processes and component information.
Ruhr University Bochum
dormakaba works very closely with the Chair of Computing in Engineering at the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Ruhr University Bochum. Several Bachelor's and Master's theses have been completed and put into practice working in collaboration with Professor König there.
