Enhancing security and efficiency: dormakaba’s latest solution at Melbourne Airport’s Virgin Terminal 3
The recent installation of dormakaba’s PIL-M02 security corridors at Melbourne Airport’s Terminal 3 (T3) marks a significant leap in secure passenger flow. Designed to create a breach-resistant path from airside to landside, this new solution enhances safety while removing the need for constant staffing at the exit point.
A tailored security solution for Melbourne Airport
In close collaboration with builder John Holland and key partners ARA Security and Heritage Glass, dormakaba delivered a bespoke solution tailored to the airport’s specific security requirements. The installed PIL-M02 Triple Unit is engineered to prevent unauthorised movement from landside into the secure airside zone.
One of the standout aspects of this project was the hands-on, collaborative process with Melbourne Airport. After the initial installation, the system underwent live on-site testing, during which further refinements were made to better suit operational needs. The result? A truly customised solution that integrates seamlessly with the airport’s broader security infrastructure.
Innovation in design and functionality
The PIL-M02 security corridors were designed not just with performance in mind but also aesthetics and practicality. Key features include:
Custom design:A unique paint finish, glass panels, and a mesh ceiling were included to match the airport’s visual requirements
Advanced security:The corridors deliver the highest available security rating, maintaining controlled and safe passenger flow
Cost-effective operation:By replacing older systems and removing the need for full-time security personnel, the solution helps the airport cut ongoing costs
Driving cost efficiencies and security advancement
Beyond improving security, the new corridors also bring lasting financial benefits. With no need for a permanent security guard at the exit, the airport can redirect resources elsewhere—without compromising safety.
Recognising collaborative excellence
This project wouldn’t have been possible without the contribution of trusted partners:
John Holland– Project builder and delivery lead
ARA Security– Ensuring compliance with stringent security standards
Heritage Glass– Supplier and installer of the customised glass elements
