Powering forward: dormakaba Hallam to embrace solar energy

Wednesday 4 June 2025

Since 2018, dormakaba’sAustralia/New Zealand &Pacific operations have proudly called Hallam, Victoria home. Nestled at 12-13 Dansu Court, our 2.86 hectare site is not just the beating heart of our regional operations, it’s where ideas take shape, products are assembled, and doors to the future are opened (sometimes literally). With a building footprint exceeding 11,500 square metres, the site houses our main administrative offices, our primary warehouse and our major regional assembly facility.

Now, as part of our global commitment to operate more responsibly and minimise our environmental footprint, we’re excited to share a new initiative that will transform how we power our Hallam facility.

Here comes the sun

Hallam Solar Panels

From May 2025, we’ll be kicking off the installation of solar energy systems at our Hallam site. In total, two systems will be fitted; one to power the factory and another dedicated to the office building. This marks an important step in our ongoing journey to become a more energy conscious organisation.

Once the systems are fully operational (expected by mid-June), the benefits will be substantial. We anticipate a 54% reduction in carbon emissions and a 30% drop in electricity costs. It's a practical, progressive move that not only makes good business sense, but also helps us play our part in tackling climate challenges.

Minimal disruption, maximum impact

The installation was recently completed throughout the month of May across two phases, with minimal disruption to our operations.

While it may just look like a few solar panels on a roof to some, this initiative represents something much bigger. It’s about leading by example, taking real, measurable steps towards more sustainable operations and showing how businesses like ours can make a meaningful difference.

Part of a bigger picture

Our decision to embrace solar power isn’t just a local initiative. It ties directly into dormakaba’s global commitment to responsible business practices and aligns with several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

Sustainable Development Goals

SDG Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy– By switching to a renewable power source, we’re reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

SDG Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production– Using energy more efficiently is a clear step in the right direction.

SDG Goal 13: Climate Action– Every tonne of carbon saved is a move towards a healthier, more climate-resilient world.

Why it matters

At dormakaba, we believe our actions, big and small, can have a ripple effect. Whether it’s through innovations in access solutions, or how we power the buildings we operate in, we aim to make considered choices that reflect our values and our role in the global community.

The Hallam solar installation is just one example of that in motion. It’s a project that reflects our commitment to smarter, more efficient operations, not only now, but for the long term.
