Jackson Lift
dormakaba are proud of the high quality OEM systems they manufacture and the innovative solutions they subsequently provide. This is reflected in dormakaba’s choice of specified dealers that includes Jackson Lift Group, who are now the UK’s largest independent lift, escalator and cradle maintenance organisation whose principle services include new installations, upgrades, modernisation, servicing and consultancy.
Following a recent visit to Jackson Lifts, Ray Easom who is the Engineering Surveyor explained how dormakaba key switches, were used to maximum effect at the world famous Guys and St Thomas’ hospitals in London. The Guys Hospital tower stands at 143 metres making it one of the tallest hospital buildings in the world, and the 11th tallest building in London. St Thomas’ Hospital is home to the Evelina Childrens Hospital. The 140 bed Evalina brings the majority of Guy’s and St Thomas’ children’s services together under one roof.
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust provides a full range of hospital services for the residents of Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham, as well as specialist services for patients further afield. The Trust has approximately 750,000 patients contacts a year with a wide range of medical needs. Unfortunately, occasions arise where the patients condition may be critical and the need for medical assistance has developed into a life and death situation where time truly is of the essence.
Outside each lift on each floor, one of the Kaba key switches is positioned. The practice being that if a crash team, doctor or surgeon needs to transfer a patient requiring urgent medical treatment to the relevant theatre or ward, they will have a key to operate the key switches. Once the key is turned in the key switch the lift will ignore all other requests made by the normal push buttons and go straight to that floor until the key is removed.
