Great Western Railway

First Great Western operates high speed, commuter, regional and branch line train services across the former Wessex Trains, First Great Western Link and First Great Western routes.

Their vision is to provide their customers and communities with travel that is safe, reliable and enjoyable. With that in mind, dormakaba were invited along to propose a selective opening device for First Great Westerns high speed trains that would help ensure the passengers safety when alighting the train at shorter platforms.

The Train Manager can stand at the last car level with the end of the platform and by simply inserting their Kaba key into the Kaba key switch they can prevent the carriage doors beyond the platform unlocking automatically with the rest of the train.

The Kaba 20 system is operated by the unique smooth Kaba dimpled key, being strong, durable and reversible and available with over 100 million key codes. dormakaba switchlocks can be included in Master Keyed systems with other products such as camlocks, door locks and padlocks to provide a high level of organisational control, with users required only to carry one key.

The system is a success due to it’s efficiency and simplicity. The keys are strictly controlled at dormakaba’s
Central Office in Devon ensuring that they are managed by First Great Western personnel and are only issued to authorised First Great Western staff. This program will also help First Great Western to run longer trains on alternate service routes.

The Kaba 20 Key system was first established in the UK in 1966 and features a Swiss 22mm round profile, now an established cylinder available with UK and continual hardware. It is also widely used in many industrial applications where security and safety requirements demand a high level of key security such as:
