Carl Black - Field Support Manager

I started at dormakaba in 2002, when it was AMCE (access, control, maintenance & engineering). I started as a Maintenance Engineer (Trainee) and the role was focussed on carrying out PPM’s on automatic and manual doors. I progressed through the company to a senior engineer over a 13.5 year period working on automatic, manual, revolving doors and access control. 

In 2015 following the integration of Service Max I was given the opportunity to come off of the road into the role of “Talent Management Officer”. This role was focussed around the inductions and onboarding of new starters, training and industry standard accreditations.

In 2017 due to the growth of the business and my role as Talent  Management Officer I was given the role a “Field Support Manager” following the introduction of the UK Service Field Support Team. Within this role, myself and the team are responsible for the training, development and support of our technicians, bridging the gap between field activity and back office activity working together to created a harmonised workforce.

What makes you proud to work for dormakaba?
Over the years we have been through a lot of change, some good and some bad. I feel that we are now more structured and stable than in past years. The investment in people through training and development, inductions and apprenticeships has had a positive impact. There is an emphasis on collaboration which helps us to work together locally in our teams and departments and also with our colleagues regionally.

What has been the highlight of your career with dormakaba?
There have been a few over the years, Starting the my first management role as “Field Support manager” and working with my team. Seeing them improve and develop as a team and individuals over the last two years has been a major highlight 

What do you enjoy most about your role?
Instead of fixings doors, we are now fixing processes and the development of people. This is rewarding because it makes a difference and improves the performance of individuals and the business.
