dormakaba securely on the right track with Metrolink
Greater Manchester’s Metrolink network is one of the most successful light rail systems in the UK, carrying nearly 20 million passengers every year.
Brian Samuels, Materials Manager at Manchester Metrolink commented, “We’ve always been pleased with the quality and security of the Kaba 20 system and the level of customer service dormkaba has provided us over the last 20 years”.
There were three original lines which run from Bury, Altrincham and Eccles into Manchester city centre. The Bury and Altrincham lines opened in 1991 followed by the Eccles line in 2000 creating a network of 37 stops covering 37 km (23 miles). A fleet of 32 trams served the existing network until December 2009 when the first of a new series of trams was introduced.
A bespoke Kaba 20 master key system was installed from the onset of the Metrolink system and is still very much in use today, proving itself for over two decades, to be a reliable and effective security solution.
The Metrolink network boasts includes a varied range of Kaba 20 locking solutions including, entrance and exit doors, signal points, telephone enclosures, high voltage and gated access points, as well as train controls on the metro cars themselves. Work is now under way on a multi-million pound upgrade and expansion of the Manchester Metrolink network.
In May 2009, a special fund of £1.9 billion was agreed for metrolink extensions and enhanement program. This has already seen the Metrolink network triple in size with nearly 60km of new tramway now operating and 92 Metrolink stops. Most recently, the 14.5km extension to Manchester Airport opened to passengers in November 2014.
These lines help reduce congestion on Manchester’s roads with five million fewer car journeys every year, and will increase the number of trips passengers make each day from 55,000 to more than 90,000.
Kaba 20 for the Manchester Metrolink is a classic example of how a bespoke locking solution, which combines the Kaba high security cylinder, with the strength of the Kaba key can withstand the test of time. We are proud of our long standing relationship with Manchester Metrolink, assisting them in providing safe access to the region for local and visiting public.
