MINEIRÃO STADIUM - BELO HORIZONTE (BRA)
Temple of the beautiful game for 50 years

The Mineirão Stadium in Belo Horizonte (in the federal state of Minas Gerais) will be almost half a century old by the time the 2014 FIFA World Cup kicks off. It was inaugurated in 1965 and has been completely refurbished for the World Cup.
Working together with Gustavo Penna and the structural engineering firm Schlaich, Bergermann & Partners, architects GMP developed a stadium which, like its counterpart in Brasilia, offers a thoroughly well defined external structure. The closely arranged, externally visible system of columnar supports has something of the “expressive” about it. To an even more pronounced extent than in the case of other stadiums, the Mineirão has been designed very much with the social environment in mind, supported by an enhanced system of transport links. Following the World Cup, it will be used for a diverse range of activities on several levels, with inclusion of a shopping centre and concert facilities.
And sustainability is also a badge that the Mineirão wears with pride, not least because the building is able to harvest, store and recycle six million litres of rainwater.
dormakaba’s Contribution to the Project
dormakaba sliding doors, glass architectural hardware and door closer systems ensure that spectators in the Mineirão Stadium see plenty of the game with fast, barrier–free access, good views and – most importantly – a feeling that they are safe. The VIP area is equipped with FSW folding–sliding partitions equipped with MANET pull handles.
