The State and District Court in Düsseldorf is one of the largest courthouses in Germany – in keeping with the building’s role in the administration of justice. With a number of unique features, the building complex also makes an architectural statement: its natural stone façade provides a harmonious link between the interior and the exterior. On one side of the road, the building is split into two sections connected by a glass bridge. A large open-plan staircase is a visual highlight in the multi-level foyer. The two integrated sections of the building both boast a light-flooded interior.
Forward-looking technical systems
Integrated within the holistic architectural concept, the building’s technical systems are also impressive. Designed with sustainability in mind, the energy concept is unique in the world. It includes an earth-to-air heat exchanger and a latent heat storage system. The concept is also designed to facilitate R&D on these systems.
